The Lucerne Valley High School Mustang football team is putting finishing touches on its offense and defense as it prepares for its season opener on Sept. 2.
Coach Chris Klinger, who also serves the school's athletic director, likes what he sees. With 12 seniors — opposed to only five juniors and sophomores — having so many experienced players figures to be a plus.
"This is one of the main reasons that I believe we will be competitive in every single game, and is one of our team goals for this year," Klinger said. "We are also talented with very experienced and good-sized linemen."
A lack of depth at the "skill" or backfield positions should be offset by players demonstrating determination and dedication.
"The commitment to the program is also excellent, and we will be prepared for every single game," he said.
It's that dedication and intangibles that should take the team far, predicts the coach.
"Look for the Mustangs to compete for an Agape League Title with 3 other schools that are very equally matched. And look for the Mustangs to win in the playoffs. We lost our first round playoff game last year and are expecting to go deeper into the playoffs this year."
